A Revolution in Reading: Compton MacKenzie, Mary Webb & Dorothy L Sayers.

What do ‘The Unpleasantness at The Bellona Club’, ‘Gone to Earth’ and ‘Carnival’ have in common? They are numbers 5, 9 and 10 on the Penguin Books list. We will read them and discuss characters, developments and historical context for each of the novels.

Share your understanding and appreciation of this classic Russian love story in a guided discussion group. Read in comfortable stages at home, then join us to discuss characters and developments. We’ll be thinking about the historical and literary context for this novel, looking in detail at selected passages, and thinking about the overall shape and scope of the story. It would be advantageous to read ‘part one’ for the first meeting.

Discover and develop your story-writing skills in exercise-based workshops. Draw inspiration, practise techniques and discuss theories to expand our understanding of the writing process. Sessions will include feedback and advice on marketing opportunities. Writing for Radio isn’t only about plays. We’ll be looking at how stories work on radio, whether fiction or memoir. We’ll be looking to create short fiction that could be recorded for broadcasting. These sessions are intended to provide material that can be used in the companion taster session, Producing recordings for Radio (C3530268)

Reading Short Stories: The Oxford Book of English Short Stories. C3530225

What makes a good short story?  Increase your understanding and enjoyment of this interesting and often under-rated form.   Each week we discuss two stories and consider what makes a good English short story.  The anthology offers a cross section of approaches from stories published throughout the twentieth century.

    We’re mostly dreaming about spring and summer here – that’s human nature for you, I suppose. though in our defence, it’s not so much cool as soggy here..
